Whittier Alaska 1 Aug 2019

Today we took the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage, thru Girdwood, Whittier, Portage, and Spencer. We saw tons of glaciers, waterfalls and majestic scenery from the comfort of our train car.

We took the tunnel to Whittier which is the longest combined rail-highway use tunnel (2.5 miles) and second longest highway tunnel in North America.   We stopped at Spencer Whistle Stop to view the wall of ice that makes up the front of the Spencer’s glacier.

You can even tell when a multiple glaciers come down different valleys to join up and make one giant glacier, like the one below which has three joining to make one (notice the black stripes where they joined).

And each glacier has its melting runoff which creates waterfalls and streams all over the place.
